Desktop Reference Tool Setup

The installation of the Desktop Reference Tool does not require any downloads; however, requires some configuration on your computer desktop.

Before you begin, you will need to register to create an account so that we can save your custom settings. If you want to skip registration, you can still use the Desktop Reference Tool; however, you will not be able to save any custom features or add or remove web forms from our extensive library. Setup instructions are provided below.

If you have any questions that are not answered below, please post your comments and questions on our new forum or send email to us at support@SkenderCo.com. Enjoy!

Windows XP Installation Instructions

This Tool will work on any Windows95 version or better, however the instructions may not match perfectly.

STEP 1: Right-click on your Windows Desktop and select Properties.
The Display Properties window will appear.

STEP 2: Click the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop... button.
The Desktop Items window will appear.

STEP 3: Click the Web tab. Verify that the Lock Desktop Items checkbox is not checked. Then click the New... button. The New Desktop Item window will appear.

STEP 4: Type desktop.skenderco.com/tool in the Location textbox
(use all lowercase since it is case sensitive). Click the OK button.
You may recieve a Add item to Active Desktop confirmation.

Click the OK button for the confirmation (no customization required here).

STEP 5: Click OK on the Desktop Items and then again on the Display Properties window (until there are no more windows open).

The Desktop Reference Tool should appear on your desktop.

STEP 6: If it your first time setting up, login with your username and password and follow the link to customize the Tool to add your own personal hyperlinks, to change the color, or to add or remove various web forms.

STEP 7: Once you are done with your initial customizations, right-click on your desktop (not over icons) and click Refresh. Your custom settings should show up.

Next, hover your mouse pointer over this desktop item, it should appear as follows. Decrease the size the Desktop item by clicking and dragging the borders to make it just small enough that the scroll bars do not show up. Move the desktop item to wherever you like (most users place the Tool just above the system tray where the clock is on your Toolbar).

NOTE: When the desktop item appears, it may expand (maximize) to the entire desktop, you will need to click on the top right menu bar to get it back to a normal window.

STEP 8: Once you have the Desktop Tool positioned where you want it, right-click on the Windows Desktop (not on the new Desktop Item), select Arrange Icons By then select Lock Web Items on Desktop. This will prevent the pesky borders from showing up when your mouse pointer moves over the Desktop Item.

NOTE: You will have to reverse this process to resize the borders if you add more content later on.
